In the journey toward a more self-sufficient existence, to manifest—from the Latin manifestus, meaning “caught in the act” or “plainly visible”—is a powerful tool for reclamation. It means bringing the things that happen in the dark into the light where they can no longer be denied. Right now, there is a “shadow pandemic” occurring that needs to be made manifest.

The Domestic and the Intimate: A Failure of States

When we talk about the domestic and the intimate, we aren’t just talking about the home. Etymologically, domestic comes from domus, referring to the state or the “home” country, and intimate comes from intimus, meaning the internal core of a system.

What is being called a shadow pandemic isn’t just a private issue; it is a manifest failure of the State to protect us from it’s own. For Copper-Colored American women of the global majority—specifically those often mislabeled with the abusive term “black”, this violence is frequently purported to come from those within municipal and government structures. These aren’t just random acts; they are internal system failures where those in power gang up on individual women.

Caught in the Act: The Reality of Modern Harassment

The data shows a sharp increase in violence against women at the hands of men internationally, with 245 million women reporting abuse in just one year. But for our community, this often manifests in specific ways that the mainstream media ignores:

• Governmental and Municipal Harassment: Insights suggest an increase in cases where state figures or municipal actors are the perpetrators of stalking and harassment.
• Technological Weaponization: Harassment is often technologically facilitated, using modern tools to monitor and infringe upon the internal safety of so called “black” Americans.
• Systemic Gaps: There are deep gaps in data collection that allow these “bad actors” to remain hidden, especially when the victims are so called “black” Americans whose experiences are often erased from the official record.

Bringing the “Shadow” to the Light

To manifest a different reality, we must use the tools of visibility to catch these actions in the act:

• Big Data as a Witness: We can use computational and big data to identify these patterns of sanctioned harassment and provide the receipts.
• Institutional Accountability: We must demand that higher education and legal institutions turn their gaze toward the specific ways municipal figures target our population.
• Culturally Competent Truth: We need a culturally competent lens that stops using abusive, reductive labels and starts looking at the actual identities and protections deserved by those facing these unfortunate occurrences.

By providing these resources and insights, we aren’t just talking; we are making the invisible visible. When we catch the hidden actors in the act, they lose their perceived power.
